90 Mile BeachWellington Shire - The Heart of Gippsland - is a great place to live, play and do business.

Located in Victoria, south-east Australia, the Shire covers an area of more than 10,900 square kilometres and has a resident population of 39,288 (ABS 2001).

Wellington is ideally placed for enjoying all that Gippsland has to offer, whether as a resident or tourist. It extends from the Great Dividing Range and Victoria's High Country, through rich irrigated plains and some of the most productive grazing land in Australia to the internationally significant Gippsland Lakes and Wetlands. There are the splendours of its national and coastal parks, the Ninety Mile Beach, Bass Strait and Wilson's Promontory.

Climate
Enjoying a mild temperate climate, with coastal and alpine local variations, the Shire experiences mild winters (average daily 15ºC), and warm summers (average daily 26ºC). Annual rainfall is around 607 mm.
Around two hour's road or rail travel from the eastern suburbs of the state capital Melbourne, we are also linked to Sydney by the Princes Highway/Freeway A1, and boast direct links to Canberra and East Coast holiday regions. The South Gippsland Highway connects the Shire to Victoria's southeast coastal attractions and also provides an alternative scenic route for those travelling to the state capital.

Transport
There are daily passenger and freight rail services between Wellington and Melbourne, with road-freight and coach services throughout the Shire and to Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra.

Population Centres

Sale - main streetWellington's population is concentrated around the City of Sale and the surrounding towns of Maffra, Yarram, Heyfield, Rosedale and Stratford. It is also experiencing significant development growth in coastal areas, particularly around Port Albert, Golden Beach, Loch Sport and Seaspray.

Education and Training

The Shire boasts a diverse range of high quality pre, primary and secondary schools, both public and private, while post-secondary education is provided through Group Training, TAFE and university organisations in Wellington and in adjacent municipalities.

Healthcare
There are excellent healthcare facilities, with hospitals in Yarram, Maffra and Heyfield and the major, regional surgical and specialist services, including paediatric, provided by the Central Gippsland hospital in Sale.

Aviation
West Sale AirportWellington is a significant regional aviation centre with the RAAF Base East Sale -complemented by West Sale Airport and Parkside Aerodrome at Yarram - providing extensive facilities for defence, general and recreational aviation and with considerable capacity for expansion.

Industries
The focus of the local economy is on primary production and agriculture, offshore oil and gas extraction, RAAF base, service industries, retail, health and community services, with tourism and recreation being key growth areas.

Wellington is rich in art galleries, professional and amateur performing arts venues, crafts and creative pursuits of all kinds, as benefits the centre of creative Gippsland. This is complemented by diverse opportunities for fine wining, dining and relaxing across the region.
